Family man!

Hiran unveils his domestic side to t2, wife and two-year-old daughter by his side...

How long have you been married?

It’s been a while... right after our graduation.

How did you meet your wife?

Anindita was my friend’s sister and we came close when I was going through a rough patch. I was in college in Mumbai then and had just broken up with the girl I was seeing. Soon after, I lost both my parents. It was tough coping with the setbacks and that’s when Anindita came into my life. We became friends and when we realised we were in love, we decided to get married.

Not many know you are married and with a kid. Were you scared that would affect your career prospects?

People think I purposely tried to keep this fact under wraps but that isn’t so. Everyone in the industry, from Haranath Chakraborty to Koel (Mullick) knew about my family. It’s true that it wasn’t really talked about but that is because no one ever asked me about my family and I did not think it necessary to go around telling people, ‘See I have a wife and a daughter’. My wife has inspired me all along, so I can never ignore her.... Being a hero or stardom is a matter of destiny. Look at Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan or Uttam Kumar. They all got into films after their marriage.

But you have never been seen with your family...

That’s because they were living in Mumbai while I was trying to be an actor in Calcutta. I had left Mumbai within six months of my daughter’s birth. I would be busy shooting all day and night. I stayed with my sister in Behala, while Anindita left her job to take care of our daughter. They moved into our new flat in Tollygunge this April. We are together now.

Does your wife take an interest in your film career?

It’s Anindita who prodded me to take up acting. She has full confidence in my potential as an actor. She had bought me a handycam to film myself and improve my acting skills. She had also got me admitted to Gold’s Gym and dance classes in Mumbai. Anindita has worked as a stylist and costume designer for small-budget films in Mumbai and she will do my styling now.

Tell us about your daughter...

Niyasa is two years old. We call her Hia at home. She gets excited when she sees me on TV! Riingo calls her Junior Hiran. She does talk, walk, eat and behave like me!

What do you do in your family time?

When I am not shooting, I am at home. Working in films can be frustrating at times but when I look at Hia I forget everything. Recently we had a great holiday in Mandarmani!
